Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. DuVernay received support from her Aunt Denise at the age of a little girl. Her aunt, a night-shift nurse, allowed her to study literature for art as well as theatre in daylight. DuVernay instantly fell in love when she showed her the 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay discovered through experience that art is a great vehicle for activism. DuVernay had her mother who was aware of her social circle and taught her how to utilize the arts as a way to express herself. DuVernay was raised living with family members in Compton was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. DuVernay's father was able to recall seeing the historic civil right's march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by her summers in Selma to later direct a documentary about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. She went to the University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay started producing for broadcast journalism while she was still at the college. She started as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to check the trash at the home of a member of the jury. Due to her work she began to feel dissatisfied by journalistic work and entered the public relations industry. DuVernay was offered a job straight after college as a publicist in the young age of a studio. In this role, she launched her own company for public relations named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. She also started several lifestyles and promotional networks, including Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful, and Urban Thought Collective.
